Closets for Older Adopted Kids

To a large extent, setting up a bedroom and closet for adopted and biological children are pretty much the same. However, if the kids are older, you need to begin with the basics and let them help out. Older children need a fully furnished room as they arrive. It is not be applicable to gradually add stuff for their bedroom or their closet.

First off, you need to provide basic furnishings for the kid's bedroom such as bed, dresser, and desk. You can wait for the child's arrival before you dab on the paint or paper for the wall. Provide clean sheets for the bed, but let the kid choose his or her own comforter. This freedom is meant to allow the kid to make a space they can call their very own.

As for clothing, the kid may arrive with a collection of his or her old clothing. However, expect to shop for new clothes and wait for the child's coming before you head out to the store because as an older kid, they already have preferences. But if think you know their style and size well enough, you can offer pre-selected items such as pyjamas and shirts. Shopping together will help you get to know them better.

Toiletries are practically very personal items, so have the child pick his or her own set. Of course, the basic things like toothpaste, comb, toothbrush, deodorant, soap, shampoo, and tissue should already be provided. Getting some recommendations from the child's foster home is a fine way to help you buy the right stuff.

Buy toys and entertainment devices based on the age of the child. An audio/video player, television, and handheld video games are good choices as starters.
